As winter approaches, keeping your home warm while managing energy costs becomes a priority. Windows and doors, often the main sources of heat loss, can play a significant role in maintaining a cozy environment if used correctly. Here are some tips to help you maximise warmth and efficiency this season:

1. Seal Drafts and Leaks

Inspect windows and doors for gaps or cracks that can let cold air in and warm air out. Use weatherstripping for doors and caulking for windows to seal these gaps effectively. Even small leaks can significantly impact your home’s overall warmth.

2. Use Curtains and Blinds Wisely

During the day, open curtains on south-facing windows to allow natural sunlight to warm your home. At night, close curtains or blinds to create an insulating barrier, trapping the heat inside. Thermal curtains are especially effective in reducing heat loss.

3. Install Door Sweeps

The gap at the bottom of doors is often a culprit for cold drafts. Installing a door sweep can prevent cold air from seeping in and keep the warm air contained.

4. Close Off Unused Rooms

Close the doors to rooms you’re not using to concentrate heat in occupied spaces. Ensure vents in these rooms are closed to avoid wasting heating energy.

5. Double-Glaze or Insulate Windows

If your budget allows, consider upgrading to double-glazed windows or adding window insulation kits. These options reduce heat transfer and improve energy efficiency.

6. Be Mindful of Door Usage

Limit the number of times exterior doors are opened, as this lets warm air escape and cold air enter. Encourage family members to close doors quickly and tightly when coming and going.

By taking these simple but effective steps, you can minimise heat loss through windows and doors, reduce energy consumption, and stay warm this winter without breaking the bank.
